The Little Bittern is a South European and West Asian species which was
not observed until recently in Central Siberia. In the past few years, S.M. Prokofyev
(1987) has found individuals in the Shirinsky District of Khakasia. In June 1979, there
was a strong suspicon of a breeding pair on an overgrown pond within 17 km of Minusinsk.
In general, it nests in dense reed thickets or on submerged trees.
