In Central Siberia, the Great Crested Grebe occurs in the steppe and
forest-steppe zones, mainly within the Minusinsk depression and in Khakasia. The northern
limit of the species' distribution recorded by Sushkin (1914) lay on the latitude of
Krasnoyarsk. Today, however, the species is rare, its numbers are declining and its range
is decreasing in size. It breeds on large, well-warmed lakes in flat areas in Khakasia
where it can even be common in places (Prokofyev 1987). It also inhabits ecologically
suitable parts of artificial reservoirs.
