The Little Grebe was not recorded in Central Siberia until recently. In
1975, the species was discovered in the Koibal steppe in the Minusinsk depression
(Bezborodov 1979). In recent years, there seem to be regular records of the species from
the south of the region, from Tuva in particular. It breeds sporadically on water bodies
with reeds in steppes where it can be common in places. S.M. Prokofyev suggests that its
numbers may increase in the coming years (Prokofyev 1987). The species is included in the
Red Data Book of the Krasnoyarsk territory.
