The
White-billed Diver is a rare, locally distributed species of arctic shores and Holarctic
tundras. It breeds only locally in Taymyr, namely in the typical tundra subzone and
further south; in western Taymyr it breeds up to the northern taiga boundary (Vronsky
1986; Krechmar 1966). There is very little exact information on the species' breeding
records in Taymyr (Krechmar 1966) making it difficult to determine more precise
relationships between the species and the zones. Typically, it breeds on flat or hilly
tundra near large lakes richly supplied with fish. The species is rare everywhere; the
total number of birds in the breeding population is also low because of its local
distribution, and the species is included in the RF Red Data Book.
